Senior Cup Final – Priorians 1sts 2 v Armagh 1sts 0
On Saturday 28th December Priorians travelled to Belfast to take on Armagh in the Ulster Hockey Senior Cup Final. Although our local team, Priorians, were the underdogs, Captain Rachel McSparron insured it did not get into the minds of her teammates.
The first quarter ended with no goals scored by either team. In the second quarter Emma Allen opened the scoring when an amazing back handed pass by one of the youngest players on the pitch, Sarah O’Neill, to Jill Kennedy set up the fantastic goal for Emma to beat the Armagh goalie.
It wasn’t just Priorians who were playing in this game and Armagh were awarded several penalty corners one which resulted in Rachel McSparron taking a blow to the head when the ball came up of her shoulder. A few minutes on the sideline to recover soon Rachel back on to lead her team once again. Even though the Priorians defence worked hard Megan McClintock in goals didn’t get off lightly. With Armagh putting on a lot of pressure in the last 10 minutes of the second quarter she had to pull of some unbelievable saves to keep a clean sheet.
In the third quarter, Emma Allen scored her second goal from an incredible angle to ensure the Senior Cup was coming to the North West for the first time and sent the travelling supporters and the Prior dugout into an excited frenzy.
After the final whistle went the subs and coach ran onto the pitch to congratulate all the players.
