IMG_1103On a cold December day Priorians 1sts travelled to the Mid Ulster town of Cookstown to play their semi final fixture in the Senior Cup. Having played away to CI the day before Priorians were not phased by having to travel again the next day. After all it was the semi final of the Senior Cup and what else would you be doing on a crisp December morning. ZZZZZ
Waiting for them in the semi final was Omagh. Even though Priorians had beaten them in the league a few weeks ago Priorians were not going to underestimate their opponents.
After giving her team talk Coach Kathryn Rough told the girls to go out and enjoy the day and it didn’t matter what the score was as long as we scored more than Omagh!!!
Omagh were the first to penetrate the circle but were unable to make anything of it. Omagh were then awarded a penalty corner but the Priorians defence were not to be beaten. Play was fast and furious
in the middle of the pitch with Priorians getting the better of Omagh with great ball passing. Coral Lapsley had a good run into the Omagh circle to win Priorians a penalty corner but this too was uncoverted. With the determination of Jill Kennedy and the skill of Sarah Black Priorians opened the scoring when Sarah Black slotted the ball passed the Omagh goalkeeper to give her team the lead. Priorians were not going to let this lead slip and with one foot in the final started to dictate the game. Omagh picked up their game in the second half and Priorians defence soon found themselves under a bit of pressure but great goalkeeping by Megan McClintock made sure they didn’t get on the scoresheet. Omagh had a green card shown to one of their players and they were down to 10 players but Priorians couldn’t capitalise on this. Priorians did get on the scoresheet again when Sarah Black picked up the ball just over the halfway line and ran at the Omagh defence. Once in the circle she scored with her trademark strike of a reverse hit which the Omagh keeper could only watch as it passed her into the back of the net.
All the Priorian players had an excellent game and it would be unfair to single out individual players.
Coach Kathryn Rough couldn’t contain her excitment even though she had put a text on Whatsapp at halftime “1 to us 9 to them”. A visit to specsavers could be on the cards before we let you loose for the final Kathryn (lol).
Next up in the final is Armagh.
Priorians would like to thank all their supporters who came to support the team and hope to see them all at the final.
