IMG_6042Saturday saw Priorians first team travel to Ballymena. The win over Omagh the Saturday before led to Priorians claiming top spot in the league table, a position the girls were keen to maintain.
Having lost 3-1 to Ballymena in the cup at the start of the season, the team knew that they would have to fight hard to leave Ballymena with some points.
Ballymena attacked with pace from the first whistle, however this did not phase the Prior girls. The defence calmly stopped any Ballymena advances towards goal.
Good linking play from the defence and midfield provided Emma Allen with the ball on the right wing. Emma made a powerful strike on goal which was denied by the Ballymena keeper.
The opposition were on the attack again, and they had a few chances on goal, but thanks to excellent tackling by the Prior defence and to some fantastic saves by keeper, Lizzie Ballentine, Ballymena failed to convert. Despite chances at both ends, the first half ended without any goals.
In the second half, both teams came out fighting hard, determined to take the lead in this very competitive game. Ballymena advanced towards goal once again, however, the Prior defence stood strong. Despite their best efforts, Ballymena could not score.
Lizzie Ballentine made an impressive diving save to stop a shot from going in at the left post and soon after, Rhonda Curry, cleared a ball off the line.
Elle Goodman, a new addition to the Priorians first squad, made a strong run up the right side. This fuelled a period of attacking play for Prior that was rewarded with a penalty corner. The penalty corner was nearly converted by Jill Kennedy, however a good clearance from a Ballymena player denied the visitors the glory. The match ended as a goalless draw and the Prior girls were happy to go away with a point.
